well not exactly. the seismic stuff had its own dedicated circuit. Bob
Kahn successfully argued that we could provide higher speed service by
sharing the satellite capacity between the seismic data and the
internet data and splitting the costs. But the seismic data itself was
not necessarily a driver of packet satellite as a technology.
