While there are such things as 'private' mailing lists, I don't see this 
one as qualifying for that label.  It's participation is open.

And I take a public mailing list as subject to arbitrary dissemination, 
including archive.  In fact, for many such lists -- and this one 
definitely does qualify -- I think public archival is, or should be, a 
major goal.  The recollections and citations included here are of 
historical import.

ps. More broadly, I actually consider everything done online to be 
viewed as public, since the state of consumer and business industry 
practices, at scale, do not seem able to protect against eventual 
disclosure.
