I didn't know this until relatively recently, when the 'invention' of 
email became a matter of public consideration and he commented about his 
motivation.  Arguably his work was comparable to the creation of simple 
Unix, in reaction to concerns about complex Multics...)

RFC 196 (7/1971) embodied the thinking Ray was reacting to.
