actually, I asked for permission to link MCI Mail to NSFNET/Internet in
1988 and the Federal Networking Council gave permission. We set up the link
in 1989. Several other email providers also joined: Compuserve, Telemail,
OnTyme and possibly others. Legislation followed in a couple of years.
