Thanks for the question (and the reactions).

 

In a few countries term length and limits are set by local NGO/non-profit legislation, in which case the local legislation holds of course. In most countries however this is open to the AGM of the local NGO/non-profit to set. 

As Chapter officer positions are volunteer positions, our recommendation is to have term length of 2 years with a maximum number of consecutive terms of 3. 

We have seen that this allows for volunteers to leave a legacy and 'get things done' during their mandate, but also allows for volunteer 'fatigue' to be taken care of and to encourage more consistent succession planning.

My first question is on the term limits clause:

 

(ii) establish the length and maximum number of terms that any individual may hold office both successively and in total. ​

 

​I think for many Chapters this alone would need by-law change, probably requiring an AGM or an extraordinary vote.​ At the same time it is so vaguely worded as to allow effectively unlimited terms. Is there a limit as to what ISOC would accept?

We understand that some of the changes in the agreement will imply some changes at Chapter level and we will of course work with all of you to ensure you can go through the necessary processes at local level in due time. 

We will expect Chapters to sign the revised agreement before 1st of January 2018 to still be eligible for Chapter funding.
