[Chapter-delegates] Trustees! not staff! Re: Announcement about the dissolution of ISOC-KH

Clearly the Chapters have been under-represented in the Board of Trustees for a considerable period of time, and that might have contributed to a certain lack of understanding, if not sensitivity, to Chapter issues.

This is my personal opinion (I am a Board member) - it is not an official Board statement in any way…

First it is important to understand that the ISOC Board is not “representative” per se. That is, while different stakeholder groups elect or appoint trustees, those trustees do not merely represent the needs/views/interests of their stakeholder group (though they typically bring a good understanding of that group which is often helpful). Rather, the trustee is responsible to care for the concerns of the entire mission of ISOC and all of the stakeholders, including end users and others that do not directly elect/appoint trustees. And, difficult though it may be, sometimes the right thing for the overall mission of ISOC may seem initially to be in conflict with one of the groups.

Second, I wish to reiterate that the Board and staff heard loud and clear that Chapters wanted a stronger voice and we all view Chapters as an increasingly important part of ISOC’s mission, which is why the new bylaws now in place will see Chapters have an equal number of Board seats.

Finally, it is sometimes seems the Chapters mailing list tends to the negative (at least this is how I perceive it). Email discussion is probably not the best way (when it is the only way) to get people to pay attention to your issues. And calling people out as ‘dishonest’ is ridiculous and wholly unproductive. I recommend you all start using the tools at your disposal to organize, form consensus, and communicate your needs/views/interests as a group — such as via the Chapter Administrative Support Working Group and the Chapter Advisory Committee.
