[Chapter-delegates] San Francisco Bay Area Chapter board officer election results.

Hi,
on Campus Party, adding to what Ted Mooney and Christian O'Flaherty have said, there's need to be cautious and make sure that:
a. as much as possible is clearly defined in advance;
b. people are aware of complaints that CP create their own "VIP" spaces etc. and ISOC may find itself unable to even enter a room to talk to the guests ISOC proposed and help invite;
c. speakers and other participants who are promised a honorary or payment for services may have to work hard and a long time to actually get their payment or may even end up forfeiting it (I continue to hear of this difficulty);
d. CP's interest in an event in a given country will be commesurate to Telefonica's.
Campus Party has its own momentum. The central preoccupation is to put together a camp for several thousand young people (the latest here was 7,000), young men and women. Avoiding booze, theft, and serious misconduct is as high a priority as connectivity which is also serious - these thousands of people are provided Internet connectivity, much of it cabled over loooong sets of tables, and the core routers and switches could feed a small city.
The talks are part of the equation - a driver but not the most important driver - to attract that large audience and a few hundred non-camper visitors. The key interest in the talks is young people's interest: modifying hardware for speed, gaming, software development (think Ruby on Rails, which I have never seen mentioned in this list), video/audiovisual, robotics (think Arduino, ditto), and some "political" stuff related to human rights and online campaigns. Undoubtedly you get an audience of a few hundred for talks related to Internet Governance, ICANN, ITU, etc., but it is in no way at the core. CP needs ISOC for contributions to the program, for a real concern to help ISOC and the Internet, and for legitimation.
All of the above can be tested and some parts may not be the case in each event. My point is: test it in advance as much as you can before diving. And talk to Ted Mooney, Christian O'Flaherty and people who have run events with CP for concrete experience and advice.
Yours,
Alejandro Pisanty

There is a Memorandum of Understanding between our two organizations which outlines the concepts of cooperation and collaboration but does not, by design, outline specific operational parameters of ISOC or for ISOC Chapters. Campus Party leadership has always envisioned that Campuseros would engage with our Chapters to identify and address areas of common interest and perhaps even join local ISOC chapters. There is therefore a great deal of flexibility for forming the events and collaboration locally around local issues. There is no formal procedure that you or any chapter are asked to follow. Rather, the opportunity is to connect and act locally with the support of both ISOC and Campus Party Staff.
Meeting with the Costa Rica Campus Party organizers and exploring the areas of common local and global interest is the right next step toward planning joint activities.
All the best,
Ted

Hi Adrian, we can learn from the Brazilian experience...
ISOC-BR is engaged with Campus Party Brazil in a very productive way for both parts and this cooperation was enabled by NIC.br<http://nic.br/>. They have been supporting the program committee since the early beginning. Last year ISOC did the regional IPv6 week during CP and this year an entire ISOC day was focused on Internet Governance. The local chapter prepared a great agenda with relevant speakers throughout the day. Both were successful experiences.
The value that ISOC can provide to Campus Party events is mainly based on content and speakers. Internet related topics are the main attractions at Campus Party and we can help them preparing attractive content for youth.
Answering your question… ISOC may not be able to help much on hosting a Campus Party, but we can build a valuable relationship with the local Campus Party program committee team as soon as the event is confirmed.

Thanks Ted and everyone for your messages.
2 quick questions:
1. Does anyone know who is responsible within ISOC for the "formal partnership" with Campus Party? I wanted to ask what are the conditions of this agreement and what are the necessary steps to plan an event in a new country (Costa Rica)
"In the summer of 2012 the Internet Society entered into a formal partnership with the Campus Party. Just as Campus Party's #somethingbetter movement is working towards using technology responsibly, the Internet Society's Community Grants program, Chapter work around the globe and research promotes open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world."
2. What does the group recommend as a tangible/specific next step in order to start conversations with Campus Party (within the framework of the partnership with ISOC) in order to plan an event in Costa Rica? (I have the direct contact of Paco Ragales, but would like to get to him once I have a specific action plan)
Christian, your feedback would be highly relevant, since I understand you spent some time recently with them.
Thanks again,

Adrian,
Check with Christian O'Flaherty directly. I was in Sao Paulo for an event with CP and can assist. We have marketing and other contacts in the global office and will contact them on your behalf.

Congrats Michael and all.
I realize it's early days with the new board, but could you also take this
opportunity to tell us about any plans you have for upcoming events or
projects? I think I recall hearing you say the proposed local Campus Party
was postponed?
