Hello everybody,

many different questions were raised in this thread, let me try to answer to
some of those:

> Is there some way to rescue our SFBay Chapter members who may be lost in
the Global ISOC list?
Yes absolutely, either directly from the chapter-functions of the portal (if
people opted for chapter-membership during sign-up) or by help from
ISOC-staff, they can search for members in a region or signup-time or
whatever search is needed.
If such searches are requested more often, they can be made available
through the portal for chapter-officers (development and upgrade is an
ongoing process)

For the sign-up Joly has already summarized most of the things I could say,
but please talk to the AMS-team if you need more information or support.
For the time being no automatic mails are sent out to the chapter officer
when someone signs up, but you can look up the list of people waiting for
your chapter to accept their membership at your chapter pages through the
portal (and do any local processing like requesting a payment locally for
your membership before accepting them).

And yes to Marcin and Rudy - you can keep your local databases and it is now
possible to extract chapter-data from the portal and as Joly has said, there
is an initiative to mass-synchronize local data with the system.
There is no pressure to give up your local systems, neither shutting down
local sign-up nor local membership management - there is just the goal to
know about members, have numbers in sync and have members at least signed up
as global (non-paying) members at the ISOC global level.

A direct API is on the development list, but was pushed back in time because
of having a system for chapters without any infrastructure seemed more
important. The direct API needs also very careful security and procedural
design before opening up such an interface - please think just 5 seconds
about possible misuse scenarios.

And my last two topics regarding the starting questions of the thread:
>Marcin said:
> I think ISOC should have http://www.isoc.org/join which redirect to
whatever is the system of the day.
about the naming of the pages - nothing is perfect and as far as I can see,
all older "signup"-pages should at least guide people to the central
signup-page of the portal and in the long run it is a good idea to keep the
www.isoc.org/join as a constant entering point.

>Rudi said:
> And to be honest, the sign up form is not that sexy ... perhaps a redesign
of the sign-up page could be on the priority list
And yes web-design is discussed as women's (or men's) dressing on the
fashion week - you can like it or you dislike it - but no group of people
has ever been able to unanimously select the single best one. The ISOC-web
overhaul project has been delayed considerably because of ongoing
discussions and the AMS-portal look and design is still waiting for the
results of this project to find its final look and feel. So please bear with
the very minimal design of the AMS-portal - it was setup more as a temporary
white fence around the building site waiting for the final more colorful and
much better designed and crafted house front.
