I am so pleased to see this initiatives like this moving forward at ISOC.
Congratulations to Anne Lord. I agree with Patrick re format.
Flexibility needed. Requiring 3 or 2 character names will get us into
trouble.
Many countries have anomolies that will cause problems with a rigorous name
organization.
I suggest the format,
<country>.isoc.org - for a country-wide chapter.
and
<reasonable local name>.<country>.isoc.org - for a city or area within a
country.
My reasoning. Permit me to look at from USA point of view.
chicago.isoc.org makes sense to me because I know of no country or area
"Chicago".
nyc.isoc.org makes sense to me for the same reason.
rome.isoc.org - is that Rome IT or Rome US?
de.isoc.org - is that Denmark or Denver USA?
se.isoc.org - is that Sweden or Southeast US Chapter?
Consider our local Washington DC chapter, which can serve as an example of
problems that might be caused in any naming system.
dc.isoc.org makes sense -- the District of Columbia, USA.
But perhaps most of the world's population would not readily think of "dc"
as
either "the center of the world" or "District of Columbia".
Some of our local chapter parochial members have wanted to name our chapter
"Tristate Chapter of ISOC" because we really cover (1) the state of
Virginia,
(2) the state of Maryland, and (3) the District of Columbia, a U.S. federal
area
not in any state. (More info than you need , but illustrates the general
problem.)
So perhaps our chapter url within isoc.org should be:
tristate.isoc.org - that is absurd.
dcmdva.isoc.org - that will not make sense to anyone who is not local.
Another naming problem for a different reason. If I remember, in years past
ISOC
headquarters often used <anything>.isoc.org for activities such as "
ietf20.isoc.org".
Let's make the best we can out of this and move forward quickly.
