[Chapter-delegates] PILOT sub-domain delegation service

Anne,
thanks a lot for the message. It shows that HQ is looking to listen to
Chapters' voices which have expressed some needs and some desires.
As others among Chapter delegates I am concerned about some aspects of
this initiative. Certainly the length of the names makes them
mnemotechnically unattractive and as Veni shows, even at this level there
would be discussion about what name is best.
The other concern I see is that by not giving chapters the name
<placename>.isoc.org (remember all, placename may be a country or not, we
also have cities in the US, regions in Spain, the disabilities chapter)
ISOC HQ may be suggesting that there may be plans to put something that is
not a chapter under those names.
To argue with an example or two, this would mean that reston.isoc.org or
geneva.isoc.org are reserved to the offices, and not for the chapters. So
far, one would be able to discuss... but what plans are in place for
bulgaria.isoc.org?
Further - there is long experience with this kind of subject in the
governance of name spaces - Veni points to part of another issue: chapters
should be eligible to register a few names, including the two-letter ISO
3166 code for their country, if the chapter is at a country level.
Regional designations are more complex as there is not a global master
list of few-letter codes.
I would suggest that a small working group be formed to shape this
initiative with the contribution of the chapters' leadership. That would
enrich the pilot, would not stop the present offer, but would certainly
help provide chapters with something that we can really want to use.
Also useful would be to know the priority of this task. Recently - on the
education, and the regional liaison fronts - we have seen initiatives
fizzle, and don't know if they will continue to enjoy staff-level support
or if the chapters involved will have to do all the work. Happy either way
but it would be a disappointment to many to see the staff support offers
evaporate away.
Yours,
Alejandro Pisanty
