Dear Alan,

Your kind words are gratefully received. When I think of how far our African colleagues have come in Internet terms just in the past
5 years, I have to smile with admiration. I sincerely hope that WiFi and WiMax will contribute to more rapid deployment, as I hope
3G mobile telephony will as well. We all celebrated with the creation of AFRINIC recently and hope that this significant cooperation
and collaboration among our African friends demonstrates what can be accomplished when a common goal is in sight. African
telecommunications infrastructure can and should be another target of opportunity for Internauts in your part of the world.
Internationalized Domain Names can't be far behind though we will need your help to figure out how to do this without creating
hazards for the Domain Name System and its users.

The Turing Award marks an important milestone for all of us who work in networking - recognition that computer networking is worthy
of note in the highest sense. ACM has broken new ground here and Bob Kahn and I are looking forward to seeing other networkers
similarly honored in the future.

Sincerely,

Vint Cerf
