Dear Chapter Delegates:
ISOC has been graciously invited by Minister Tarek Kamel of Egypt to host an
INET Conference in conjunction with the Egyptian Governments conference
known as Towards WSIS Phase II: An Arab African Dialogue. (Set for Cairo May
8-10, 2005).
We are grateful to Minister Kamel for such an invitation and we are very
much interested in organizing such an event. We want to make this as
beneficial as we can for those who attend and help ISOC further its
strategic goals (in particular, given the nature of the Egyptian Government
event, help ISOC to further its position vis-à-vis the ongoing global
discussion on Internet Governance). As you can see the timeframe within
which to do this is very limited.
It is our view that our participation in this would not be an INET event
along the historical INET model but would rather be the first in what we
expect might be an ongoing series of Regional INET conferences. The maximum
presentation would be two tracks over two days depending on feedback,
suggested topics and presentations. We would expect, in conjunction with
this event, to convene an ISOC Chapters meeting which itself would be either
a regional Chapters meeting or a global Chapters meeting or both (see
questions below).
As further background, we expect this INET event would be free and open to
the public. It would happen on Friday or Saturday or Sunday (or combination)
May 6-8, 2005. We do not have budget to pay for members travel or speakers
reimbursement. We would want to host such an event so long as we felt
confident that a reasonable number of Chapter members would attend. We also
want there to be a broad audience which would come away well versed in the
Internet, how it works, why it works, potential risks to its future as well
as the topic of Internet Governance. We would want this audience well
equipped to spread the word back at their homes about the Internet and the
Governance discussion and the various positions under consideration.
ISOCs position on the Governance discussion can be seen at
http://www.isoc.org/news/7.shtml
To that end I am asking for feedback on the following:
1. Would you support the idea of a regional INET along these lines?
2. Are you willing to put the word out to your members and other
constituencies of interest that you work with about this event?
3. Do you have members who might like to submit presentations for
consideration to be a part of the agenda?
4. Are you willing to serve on the Program Committee (we expect to
become active as early as this week and meet by phone periodically to work
our details)?
5. Do you support a regional chapter meeting or a global chapter
meeting? Or both? We expect a regional chapter meeting might focus on
networking among chapters, project coordination and the like. A global
chapter meeting could focus on overall chapter priorities. Conceivably we
could split the day with a couple of hours of one type and a couple of hours
of the other.
