There's another monetary flow in Internet Economics that I forgot to 
mention.

Data is valuable.  Whenever someone (human, advertiser, whatever) uses 
the Internet, there's all sorts of places along the paths where someone 
can see what you're doing.  ISPs know where your datagrams go and how 
often and long you stay there.  Your DNS service knows what places you 
interact with.  The websites you use can track all sorts of things about 
your behavior.  The emails you send, and who you're communicating with, 
are full of valuable information which can be gleaned along its path in 
a variety of places.   Even web archives, such as the one for this list, 
can be "harvested" to collect active email addresses and learn what 
people are talking about.   Techniques for tracking users have been 
developed, such as "web beacons".

That has led to the emergence of another monetary flow aspect of 
Internet Economics - in collecting, selling, and buying data about users 
behaviors and interests.  That data is valuable to someone, and they are 
willing to pay money to get it.

Of course, such data has been valuable since long before the Internet 
appeared.  Companies used to pay for "market surveys" to inform their 
business decisions.

The same needs exist in the new Internet world, but the costs of 
collecting and disseminating such data have been changed dramatically by 
the Internet.

I can't remember but maybe you can.   When was the first time you sent 
an email and casually mentioned some obscure item, and then suddenly 
started seeing ads for that item on web pages?  It's been happening for 
a long time, but history might be interested in when it started and who 
did it.

Similarly, I don't have any comprehensive data, but it seems to me that 
I'm getting more requests now, often by email, to participate in some 
kind of survey about something.  The surveyors have discovered that it's 
cheaper to send thousands of emails than to have a phone bank of cold 
callers.

An article recently noted that the majority of users of the Web are now 
robots, which don't behave like humans when looking at websites.  I've 
used camelcamelcamel.com myself for years to track prices of things I 
want to buy but can wait until the price drops. It's expanded recently 
to cover more storefronts.   Bots aren't susceptible to advertising like 
humans are.

With computing now cheap enough that AI agents are affordable, I'm 
surprised it's taken so long for the bots to take over.  I wonder what 
part of Internet usage is bots talking to bots, doing things like 
periodic backups of human's computers.   Back in the late 1970s, I 
remember musing that the ARPANET traffic might be getting dominated by 
things like mail servers talking amongst themselves, rather than the 
Telnet traffic which dominated in the initial ARPANET.

The future is unclear, but the past might be useful to deal with 
whatever comes along.
