I have had several conversations with younger folks.  Email to them is 
as you say, not something they look at every day, only when they are 
expecting something like a 2FA or confirmation or something.

What's even more disturbing is many young people I have talked to do not 
understand the distinction between gmail and email often using the term 
interchangeably.  I have often asked "who do you think owns email?" and 
the answer I get is almost invariably something like "google, right?"

I do not like it that I have to be on 3 or 4 different chat systems to 
keep in touch with people I know.  I so wish there was a standardized 
interoperable chat system.  Early smtp had the SEND command which I 
never saw used and seems to be unsupported now.  I was hoping it might 
be XMPP, then Matrix but those seems to have fizzled out.  Someone here 
I am sure can provide an exhaustive list...
