John, your "controlled from a parallel port" brings back fond memories of
Jan Axelson's landmark book "Parallel Port Complete" from 1996,
and the hardware random number generators that I built for cryptography,
interfacing via the parallel port,
various designs published starting in 1989, during the first crypto war.

I do still have the toaster. It spends most of its time on a shelf in our
storage room. It still work though it has a slightly concerning aroma when
it toasts.
The controller was basically just a relay controlled from a parallel port on
a computer and who has parallel ports anymore?
(Hi Karl :))
