Ship wifi used to be expensive geosync satellite service, which worked
well because it was so expensive hardly anyone used it. I recall something
like $40/day on the Queen Mary 2 a decade ago. When you get into port
you can use your phone so it depends where you are -- in New York a
few thousand roaming users is a rounding error, in a tiny island it's
problem.
These days ship wifi is more likely to be Starlink which is cheaper and faster.
