I'm not saying it wasn't useful.  It was cheaper than the very high long 
distance dial-up rates charged back then.

But it meant no flexibility of peer-to-peer services and that there was 
a basic difference between user attachments and host attachments.

As I recall, they were expensive and maybe more tech/ops hassle.
