Thanks to KarlA for the legal explanation! It reinforced my feeling
that I got a decade ago when I accidentally ended up as an expert
witness in a patent fight. The legal system hasn't yet adapted to the
new world of digital media and networking.
Thanks also to AndrewS for his help in finding a home for this list!
All the discussion of archives, the Datacomputer, et al reminded me of
Lick's vision of "human-human communications" -- including but not
limited to what we now know as email. That was more than fifty years
ago, part of his "Galactic Network" ideas that drove our work at MIT.
As far as I remember, that aspect of his vision was never written down
anywhere, except in various email threads in the 1970s that have likely
been lost. What we have today is still pretty far from what he
envisioned. I'll write down what I remember, and send it in a new thread.
