I think that is a case of having default domain names, implying a 
context, rather than being 'instead of'.

That is, @acme only has global utility if there is a specific domain 
name that is used to get there.  Using a proprietary app can hide the 
domain name, of course, but it's still there, since the app needs to get 
to the server and that's done using a domain name, even if the user 
doesn't see it.

Stated differently:  The user interface is often able to hide the domain 
name, for popular services, but the domain name is still there.
