Thanks for you note, in particular because...

I did not join the Arpanet community until Spring of 1972 and was never 
involved with lower-level Arpanet tech.

As a passenger on that train -- and an eager listening -- I recall 
hearing 56K a lot more than I heard 50K.

I do remember hearing details of the sort being recited here, now, but 
the number that sticks in my brain, from back then, is 56K.
