The fact that reference to a first must be precise and accurate, so as 
to distinguish it from the other, many firsts that are certainly related 
to it, is no excuse for pretending that a specific first is not 
important and not a first.

Treating a first as part of an arc with other firsts is a benefit.  It 
sets a focus for the first, rather than distracting from it or lessening 
its import.

ps. Anonymous FTP was the beginning of the Web.  That's a very 
underappreciated first.
