I was in Moscow for a conference just before the coup attempt and spent a lot of time with RELCOM folks who I had "met" online since we had used the net to organize the conference. Fun fact -- local calls were free at the time, so Vadim Antonov had a Teletype in his apartment that had been online continuously for 6 months.

We were running the other end of their link, in Helsinki. We did
have some interesting discussions with the people in the US in
order to get a go-ahead on that link.
