You might not think it, but I know for a fact that multiple people do 
run iBGP between two adjacent routers on the link-net IPs.  (Think 
serial interfaces between two offices that are part of a larger single AS.)

But if the WAN link is also the SPOF that can't be avoided, then using 
loopback IPs just means additional complexity.
