Since I wasn't involved with this work then, I wondered when classes 
were introduced.  And I found:


RFC 760, 1980:

> Source Address:  32 bits

RFC 791, 1981

Since the Internet went into production use in 1983, that counts classes 
as in from the start, IMO.
