One ought to include the concept from Vannevar Bush's 1945 article "As we 
may think" (http://www.theatlantic.com/unbound/flashbks/computer/bushf.htm) 
as a predecessor for all of this.  I hope nearly everyone reads this in 
their computer science education, but I'm afraid not.

There is a direct historical linkage between this idea, Licklider's 1967 
paper on networks of networks, the Internet, and the WWW.
