Dear Christine,
Thank you so much for getting back to me on behalf of Sally and for your generous compliments regarding the work of the ISOC Chapter here in New York.
Our chapter is well aware of the Internet Society Foundation’s Beyond the Net program, having received such funding from the Foundation just prior to the pandemic in late 2019-2020. While we were certainly grateful for that support, what we seek now is to scale our successful efforts significantly, especially given the enormity of the underserved market that we work with here in NYC.
Additionally, we would like to extend and replicate our work with the Resident Public Safety Teaching Network to other Chapter communities and regions around the globe, and in fact, have recently made just such a proposal to the Foundation under their Resiliency funding initiative.
We at the New York Chapter welcome the further support of the Internet Society and would certainly be interested in reaching out to the Community Engagement Manager for our region as you suggested to discuss partnership arrangements. We have several specific Chapter projects cued up and would be delighted to explore partnership possibilities with the Community Engagement Manager. Please connect us at your earliest convenience.
Thank you again, Christine and Sally, for your support of our Chapter’s work here in New York. We look forward to working together to find creative ways to extend the reach and benefits of our Public Safety Teaching Network to other chapters and regions.
Per your request, I have attached the pictures of our Chapter at work to share with others on this thread.
Best regards,
Stu

Dear Stuart,
Thank you so much, also on behalf of Sally, for sharing these highlights of the great work done by the Internet Society United States New York Chapter as a follow-up to your intervention during the recent Internet Society Community Day for North America. Congratulations!
It is great to see such important projects shared here with all current chapter leaders, as these could be an inspiration for other chapters working on similar projects (or project ideas).
With the Internet Society Foundation’s Beyond the Net program, our chapters have a dedicated funding program to support this type of project. And, as shared during the last Community Day, we are currently working on increasing the funds available to our chapters through a dedicated donations appeal for "Beyond the Net". You can find more information about this appeal here<https://donorportal.internetsociety.org/page/btn> - feel free to share with your networks!
The exchange of best practices and ideas is very much encouraged here on the list, but also on occasions such as Community Days and regional calls.
Our Community Engagement Manager for the region is also available to brainstorm on other ways to raise funds or to enter into partnerships around specific chapter projects. I encourage you you start the conversation there and possibly bring it to one of the next regional chapter leader calls for further discussion.
Thank you such much for all the passion and dedication that you bring to our shared vision of an Internet that is for everyone!
Best regards,
Christine
PS: Stuart, can you please send the pictures you meant to share with Kyle Shulman at <shulman at isoc.org<mailto:shulman at isoc.org>> - we can then share a link to the pictures as a follow-up to this thread. Thanks!

Stu's presentation was eloquent about how chapters and ISOC should reach out to communities.

Hello Sally,
I want to thank you for hosting the Community Day North America webinar last week, and for permitting me to speak out about the dire economic circumstances and needs of the community that we serve here in New York City, as well as the NY Chapter’s efforts to make a difference.
While I spent my time talking about the enormous underserved community that we focus on, I wanted to share with you some of the actual achievements that we have been able to accomplish since receiving the Beyond the Net grant awarded to the Chapter just before the pandemic.
NY Chapter leaders have partnered with public housing residents in a not-for-profit community technology undertaking, The Smart Community Initiative (www.thesmartci.org<http://www.thesmartci.org/>). Together we have deployed the Resident Public Safety Teaching Network that empowers residents with technology tools and applications, that they operate and control, to improve their quality of life and public safety.
The Resident Public Safety Teaching Network includes:
* Mobile Community Command Centers for resilient Internet connectivity and communications during weather-related and other disruptions.
* Resident streaming servers deployed for multiple developments which enable residents to stream information to themselves, as well as others, ubiquitously.
* Servers enable 24/7 resident-controlled streaming of building lobbies.
* Digital bulletin board monitors, controlled by residents, for real-time communications, including public safety and emergency announcements.
* Provision of alternative connectivity for resident lifeline service during power outages and other emergencies that enhances the resiliency of community-based Internet infrastructure.
* Training of residents by Chapter Members in the creation and distribution of internet-based digital content utilizing the Resident Teaching Network.
* Training of residents in emergency radio communications procedures and protocols utilizing Chapter-developed curriculum and trainers.
* FCC licensed communications network that enables real time communication for public safety and quality-of-life reporting, including interface with First Responders.
* Emergency network training and deployment through Board Member participation in the WHCR Emergency Broadcast Team (WEBT, www.whcrebt.org<http://www.whcrebt.org/>).
* WEBT is a volunteer service headquartered at City College of NY, where WHCR radio station facilities provide emergency communications infrastructure and services to community organizations.
* The NY Chapter has partnered with WEBT for several years in the sponsorship of its annual Harlem Emergency Preparedness Day event.
(I have attached a photographic overview of the deployed Resident Public Safety Teaching Network for your perusal.)
Sally, we at the New York Chapter are certainly excited to have you on board and welcome you as the new CEO. We look forward to working together in a real way to tackle the ignorance and lack of understanding for the plight of people in public housing.
Towards that end we would love to meet with you to strategize ways of further working to raise funds for projects like the resident-operated and controlled teaching network, and to help bring digital equity to the single largest underserved community in North America.
Warm regards,
Stu Reid
NY Chapter Board Member
