Thank you, Charles, for your expressed support for our Chapter's work here in NYC with The Smart Community Initiative. We too believe that it is a viable model for replication in other communities around the globe, and we'd love to host a visit from you and any other ISOC folks interested in our work. Just let us know.
Best,
Stu

Stu's presentation was eloquent about how chapters and ISOC should reach out to communities.

Hello Sally,
I want to thank you for hosting the Community Day North America webinar last week, and for permitting me to speak out about the dire economic circumstances and needs of the community that we serve here in New York City, as well as the NY Chapter’s efforts to make a difference.
While I spent my time talking about the enormous underserved community that we focus on, I wanted to share with you some of the actual achievements that we have been able to accomplish since receiving the Beyond the Net grant awarded to the Chapter just before the pandemic.
NY Chapter leaders have partnered with public housing residents in a not-for-profit community technology undertaking, The Smart Community Initiative (www.thesmartci.org<http://www.thesmartci.org/>). Together we have deployed the Resident Public Safety Teaching Network that empowers residents with technology tools and applications, that they operate and control, to improve their quality of life and public safety.
The Resident Public Safety Teaching Network includes:
* Mobile Community Command Centers for resilient Internet connectivity and communications during weather-related and other disruptions.
* Resident streaming servers deployed for multiple developments which enable residents to stream information to themselves, as well as others, ubiquitously.
* Servers enable 24/7 resident-controlled streaming of building lobbies.
* Digital bulletin board monitors, controlled by residents, for real-time communications, including public safety and emergency announcements.
* Provision of alternative connectivity for resident lifeline service during power outages and other emergencies that enhances the resiliency of community-based Internet infrastructure.
* Training of residents by Chapter Members in the creation and distribution of internet-based digital content utilizing the Resident Teaching Network.
* Training of residents in emergency radio communications procedures and protocols utilizing Chapter-developed curriculum and trainers.
* FCC licensed communications network that enables real time communication for public safety and quality-of-life reporting, including interface with First Responders.
* Emergency network training and deployment through Board Member participation in the WHCR Emergency Broadcast Team (WEBT, www.whcrebt.org<http://www.whcrebt.org/>).
* WEBT is a volunteer service headquartered at City College of NY, where WHCR radio station facilities provide emergency communications infrastructure and services to community organizations.
* The NY Chapter has partnered with WEBT for several years in the sponsorship of its annual Harlem Emergency Preparedness Day event.
(I have attached a photographic overview of the deployed Resident Public Safety Teaching Network for your perusal.)
Sally, we at the New York Chapter are certainly excited to have you on board and welcome you as the new CEO. We look forward to working together in a real way to tackle the ignorance and lack of understanding for the plight of people in public housing.
Towards that end we would love to meet with you to strategize ways of further working to raise funds for projects like the resident-operated and controlled teaching network, and to help bring digital equity to the single largest underserved community in North America.
Warm regards,
Stu Reid
NY Chapter Board Member
