Hi folks,
admitted I feet guilty. Guilty, because I carelessly considered all the dark rumors about the new AMS aka Fontera by Salesforce to be true. I was confused by the fact that ISOC mandated its membership administration to a monster agency that is big in marketing, sales, and customer (of course artificial) intelligence (aka "know more about your customer than she herself"). Somehow this appeared to me like a perversion of some of ISOC's core values.
By accident - luckily enough - I clicked on the following tutorial:
* https://communitytraining.internetsociety.org/training/send-email-as-chapter-leader/?locale=de
This is an excellent example of many of the improvements that we can only have with Fontera by Salesforce. (The page is open to the public - so to say a donation of wisdom from ISOC to the world.) It educates chapter leaders on how to send an E-Mail to their members.
You might argue that this should be an easy task - not much room for improvements:
1. open your favorite mail client > new message
2. > fill:
1. To:<members-mailing-list>@<chapter-domain>
2. Subject: <subject>
3. and <contents> to the mail body
3. > click: send.
But this has significant drawbacks. Some of them:
1. its incredibly simple - leaves your brain unchallenged
2. maybe every Chapter member can use it
3. outcome from 2.: Chapter members can group communicate with each other
4. neither Salesforce nor ISOC can grab any data or even metadata
5. ...
Good we can learn how to do it right with the help of Fontera by Salesforce. Let's take our first steps into this brave new world. Many thanks to ISOC for this outstanding tutorial:
1. The page claims to be available in Deutsch, Português, Español, Nederlands, Italiano, dansk, 日本語, English, Français
2. after choosing any target language, the page spontaneously translates (just) a few headers, obviously using the first pre-medieval machine translation program
3. only "two designated communication officers" are allowed to send mails
4. you will learn about "Campain" - creating one is a prerequisite for sending a mail
5. you will learn about "Journey" - you have to link the Campaign to a Journey to send the mail
6. you have to be very careful not to change the - whatever this is - "Business Unit"
7. this done, you can create the message ( Chapter Emails > Email Campaign ...)
8. there is a wise distinction between mails to "200 members or less" and "more than 200 members" - so please count carefully
9. obviously it prevents Chapter Leaders from skylarking while spending their time sending mails to their members
10. ...
Sorry I'm moved and overwhelmed by the fine web of terms, the beauty of the process and this intuitive guidance. Hallelujah! I saw the lights! But I got tears in my eyes - so I have to stop here. Maybe some experts for usability or accessibility can cover more highlights - given that ISOC is leading in emphasizing the importance of accessibility and ease of use (at least for the rest of the world).
Looking forward to a great year 2024 - long live Fontera by Salesforce!
Klaus

Off topic: I have an account with internetsociety.org. It worked with "admin.internetsociety.org" and "sso.internetsociety.org" before. Now "auth.internetsociety.org" says "Invalid username or password". But - upon request - it says: "A verification code has been sent to your email address (2024-01-15)" (there is hope!). And sometimes (2024-01-14) it sends (sent?) a verification code. Unfortunately this code never worked. 🙁
