We have recently received the application below to start an Internet Society Chapter in Los Angeles and Southern California. I invite you to review it and share your comments by 22 April 2024.

Chapter Application Los Angeles and Southern California
A. Proposed name of the Chapter
The Los Angeles and Southern California Chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC LA-SOCAL)
B. Community of Interest the Chapter will serve.
The ISOC LA-SOCAL will generally serve individuals who live or work in the geographic area of Los Angeles and the surrounding area of Southern California from San Luis Obispo County and eastward to the southern border of California, with the understanding that all ISOC Chapters are not confined to geographic areas.
C. Purpose and scope of Chapter
The chapter will work towards:

  1.  Supporting awareness by building initiatives and outreach efforts concerning internet connectivity.
  2.  Facilitating discussion of issues that affect internet users in the community.
  3.  Furthering the community's participation in areas important to the evolution and further
development of the Internet.

  1.  Ensuring the community voice is included in Internet policy development.
D. Outline of key priorities for the first year of the Chapter
It is important that, besides drive and vision, there are also some concrete plans for what the chapter will achieve in its first year of operation. If you are unsure as to how to develop a plan, please visit our resource page.
In the short term, the chapter will aim to achieve the following objectives:

  1.  Establish a presence in the communities and build awareness through partnering with existing organizations and promoting membership in ISOC Los Angeles Chapter.
  2.  Policy development Global Connected Internet and Unrestricted Reachability
  3.  Internet Access for Homeless Communities
  4.  Digital Literacy and Education
  5.  Establish a website and social media presence to promote ISOC LA Chapter events and
local initiatives that also support the ISOC and local communities.
E. Founding members of the Chapter
Please list complete contact information and affiliations for all persons who will be working together to create the Chapter. A minimum of 25 Internet Society members is required for a charter. Please supply their names.
Membership Tracking document - Current have 41 members signed up to ISOC and evenly distributed across industry, academia and other parts of civil society.
F. List of supporters and partner organizations
Please list complete contact information for any organizations or groups who will be supporting or partnering with the potential Chapter. Be sure to indicate an individual or an individual’s role for each supporter and their contact details. We strongly encourage Chapters to take a “multi-stakeholder” approach to forming a Chapter.

  1.  A website to communicate events, recruit board members, share key information, and raise up the voices of our membership and the ISOC community-at-large.
  2.  A monthly newsletter to all members.
  3.  A Discord Server to communicate with members and document events and a LinkedIn
group to recruit new members.

We are in the process of establishing a new 501(c)3 to house this chapter, paying the $600 cost using a grant from the Internet Society Foundation (San Francisco and Bay Area Chapter).
I. Additional information
Our 25 founding members include past ISOC chapter board members from other chapters who have relocated to LA, so we are honored to start off this process with a lot of depth in the organization.
