The Internet of today offers access to content and information through conn=
ectivity to web pages and to multiple terminals (e.g., mobiles, TV). The ne=
xt evolution will make it possible to access information related to our phy=
sical environment, through a generalised connectivity of everyday objects. =
A car may be able to report the status of its various subsystems using comm=
unicating embedded sensors for remote diagnosis and maintenance; home infor=
mation about the status of the doors, shutters, and content of the fridge m=
ay be delivered to distant smart phones; personal devices may deliver to a =
central location the latest status of healthcare information of remotely ca=
red patients; environmental data may be collected and processed globally fo=
r real time decision making. 
Access to information relating to our surrounding environment is made possi=
ble through communicating objects able to interact with that environment an=
d react to events. This makes possible new classes of applications such as =
smart homes with automated systems to monitor many aspects of daily living,=
 smart grids and intelligent energy management, smart mobility with better =
control of traffic, or smart logistics with the integrated control of all p=
rocesses in the entire distribution chain. There are endless examples of th=
is evolution of networked devices, also known as the Internet of Things (Io=
T). 
The Internet of Things holds the promise of significant progress in address=
ing global and societal challenges and to improve daily life. It is also a =
highly promising economic sector for sustainability, growth, innovation and=
 employment. But it is likely to have a profound impact on society, in area=
s like privacy, security, ethics, and liability. The policy challenge is to=
 assess the right trade-off between the potential economic and societal ben=
efits and the control that we want to retain over an environment where mach=
ines will gather, exchange, process and store information automatically. Th=
e effects on our private and public space require that people and their gov=
ernments debate the appropriate governance and management of the Internet o=
f Things in the future. To this end the European Commission envisions a rec=
ommendation addressing the main issues, of which a number are outlined in t=

The consultation is being launched only in electronic form via the interact=
ive policy-making tool.You are strongly advised to prepare your contributio=
n in advance before filling-in the questionnaire online. We recommend you d=
ownload the PDF file of the questionnaire ( pdf 79KB) , to allow you to dra=
ft your answers to the open text questions carefully. After preparing all y=
our answers, please fill out the questionnaire. 
Questions are either compulsory or optional. If any of the compulsory field=
s have not been filled in, the system will not allow you to submit the ques=
tionnaire but will redirect you to the incomplete answer and give you an op=
portunity to correct it. An error message will appear in a purple/red colou=
r under the question in which a problem occurred. 
If you leave the questionnaire for 90 minutes without activity, your countr=
ibution will not be saved due to a time-out. 
When you successfully submit the questionnaire, a confirmation message will=
 appear on your screen and you can print your answers. 
Contributions may be submitted in any official EU language. 
Contributions received in reply to the consultation will be handled exclusi=
vely by the Commission services in full confidence; the summary of the cons=
ultation's results will be published on the Commission's website in an anon=
ymous way.
