Dear Chapter Delegates,
I am excited to be running for the Chapter Advisory Council Steering
Committee. I'm the current President of the Greater New York Metropolitan
Area Chapter (ISOC-NY).
I am deeply committed to Internet governance and policy, and empowering
Internet end-users. I am writing you now from Hamburg, Germany, where I am
participating in ICANN78. Earlier this month, I was at the IGF (Internet
Governance Forum) in Kyoto, Japan. I've been involved with ICANN since
2007. My focus is on end-users' rights and representation. I am part of the
At-Large Community of ICANN, where I'm currently the Chair of NARALO (North
American Regional At-Large Organization), the ICANN home for North American
Internet end-user organizations (“At-Large Structures” or "ALS's") and
individual members. Previously, I was a member of the At-Large Advisory
Committee, the leadership team for the At-Large [end-user] community at
ICANN. I’ve been to over 30 ICANN public meetings and worked on well over
a dozen Working Groups. I started out in ICANN’s Intellectual Property
Constituency (and served as President for 3 years), but I came to realize
that I wanted to work for the interests of Internet end-users (i.e., all of
us) and not intellectual property owners.
The grassroots of the Internet Society -- the Chapters -- represent some of
ISOC's greatest strengths; our voice within the ISOC structure is critical,
and the Chapter Advisory Committee is the focus of that voice. The
Steering Committee must work to empower the ChAC and ultimately the
Chapters in ways that are effective and meaningful for the mission of the
organization and the Chapters. We also have an oversight function that
should not be overlooked. It's important to keep the Chapters informed and
involved in the ChAC's work, and that is a shared responsibility of the
individual delegates and of the ChAC as a whole -- but it is the Steering
Committee that needs to design and improve the means and methods of
communication. In short, the Steering Committee has a unique set of
responsibilities, on behalf of so many others. I am more than ready to
tackle those responsibilities.
I'm a lawyer who practices in the areas of technology, Internet, data
protection and privacy, cybersecurity and web accessibility (for persons
with disabilities). I think this is valuable experience to have on the
Steering Committee (even though I often wish that law played a much less
important role in technology-related matters).
I was born, raised and still live in New York City. I graduated from
Columbia Law School in 1986, where I was the Editor-in-Chief of the
Columbia-VLA Journal of Law & the Arts, and from Wesleyan University in
1981, where I majored in Sociology/Psychology and Music and was the
President of the radio station (WESU). I live in Greenwich Village and
grew up on the Upper West Side. (Thanks to my father, I'm a dual citizen
of the US and Canada.) In my spare time, I play the baritone and bass
saxophones. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me
at greg at isoc-ny.org.
Thanks!
Greg
