While I didn't work here when that was the case, I am reliably informed by people who were involved that the overhead of making cards, generating invoices, and so on almost always wiped out the revenue gained.  Now, maybe that would be different today (I expect tools have gotten better).  But if people wouldn't mind making such support then I say there's no time like the present: you can make a donation any time!  The new workflow allows convenient monthly recurring donations, too, so you don't need to do a lump sum or remember to come back.
