My personal view is that email is still one of the most efficient
and focused ways of communication. I would hate an organisation
like ISOC to have to resort to all sorts of interactive collaborative
tools that would take much more time and attention to deal with.
As Internet professionals, we are able to set up email filters
and automatic sorting of email into folders and mailboxes, and
I for one would not want to have to log into yet another collaborative
tool just to find out what is going on. Yes, those tools have a
place and are very useful in many situations, but I feel this isn't
one of them.
On the other hand, I agree that all sorts of hand-waving and
congratulations, while a nice gesture, don't really belong in
the mailboxes of all of us. Professionalism also means respecting
the time and attention span of the recipients.
