Dear all,
I am delighted that the vote for the amendments to the Chapter Advisory
Council Charter has given approval, to such an extent that as many as 83
chapters provided their approval. Congratulations to all.
Unfortunately for me, after drumming so much support from so many
chapters and encouraging chapters to attend the call, I demonstrated by
ineptitude by wrongly saving the time at which the call was due to take
place and I therefore missed it!
It is my loss, as I was going to say a few words of thanks on the call,
as this is my last year on the Chapter Advisory Council Steering
Committee. Instead, and sadly having missed the call, I will write my
projected intervention here. The good thing for you is that here, if you
are not interested, you can press the "delete" button *now*. :-)
I have had the honour to serve on the Chapter Advisory Council Steering
Committee every year since its inception in 2016, each time as the
representative for Europe, and also as Vice Chair for the past three
years. That is five years with a significant number of people that I
wanted to thank.
First, I wanted to thank the three Chairs under which I served:
Avri Doria – New York Chapter - Chair
Richard Hill – Switzerland Chapter – Chair
Eduardo Diaz – Puerto Rico Chapter - Chair
Without their leadership, the Chapter Advisory Council would not be
where it is today. Even after spending so many years on Internet
Governance issues, I have learned a lot from them and I am grateful for
each of their leadership styles.
Each year had its own members and I wanted to acknowledge them on the
call. Some have served multiple years but I did not want to make this
too long so I have only listed their first year of attendance.
2016
Nadira Alaraj – Palestinian Chapter
Babu Ram Aryal – Nepal Chapter
Douglas Onyango – Uganda Chapter
Rudi Vansnick – Belgium Chapter
David Vyorst – US Washington DC Chapter
2017
Ali Almeshal – Bahrain Chapter
Jahangir Hossain – Bangladesh Dhaka Chapter
Ram Mohan – US Philadelphia Chapter
Janvier Ngoulaye – Cameroon Chapter
Beatriz Rodriguez – Uruguay Chapter
2018
Satish Babu – India Trivandrum Chapter
Carlos Vera – Ecuador Chapter
Ines Hfaiedh – Tunisia Chapter
Nabil Bukhalid – Lebanon Chapter
Sivasubramanian Muthusamy – India Chennai Chapter
2019
Elaine Ford – Peru Chapter
Susannah Gray – US San Francisco Bay Area Chapter
Lilian Nalwoga – Uganda Chapter
Amrita Choudhury – India Delhi Chapter
Peter Koch – Germany Chapter
2020
Jean-Pierre Darrès – Canada Québec Chapter
A special mention goes to Satish Babu who has assumed the role of
Secretary for several years and to Christine Saegesser, ISOC Staff, who
has done such an excellent job in accompanying the Committee and in fact
the whole Chapter Advisory Council, but also to Joyce Dogniez, also ISOC
Staff, who was the first ISOC Staff to support the Advisory Council.
Why list all of the people above? Because 1. they deserve the
recognition and 2. this is a wonderful set of people from all around the
world. As a result, I consider the experience that I have had on this
Steering Committee, to be so enriching culturally, that I would
recommend it to everyone. As the Steering Committee had a call every
month and as it met face to face as many times as possible at IGF
meetings or ICANN meetings, when it could, I consider all of the above
people my friends. Thank you, boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, I
miss you.
No round of thanks will be complete without thanking the two "founding
fathers" of the Chapter Advisory Council - Evan Leibovitch and John
More. These two "troublemakers" put together years of discussions going
round in circles, into a Charter and an action plan that gave rise to
the ISOC Chapters Advisory Council. They were helped by a dozen people,
again from around the world, back in 2013 and 2014. As a truly
bottom-up, Chapters-led initiative, the whole history of the Chapters
Advisory Council has shown that in five years, it has been possible for
it to establish itself as the consensus based voice of the Chapters in
the Internet Society structure. The vote today showed that it was also
able to improve itself, and I hope that in the future, it will be
possible to continue to do such improvements - thanks to the renewed
support and involvement of the Chapters taking part in the Council.
And finally I would like to thank all of you who are involved in
representing your Chapter on the Chapter Advisory Council, who have
renewed their trust in me five times. To be elected to the Steering
Committee is a privilege and I have full confidence that next year's
Steering Committee will bring more successes and achievements to be
proud of, in keeping the dynamism of the Chapters alive.
In the past weeks, contacting so many Chapters that had not yet voted, I
realised how we are all humans and the current COVID19 pandemic has
affected us all greatly. Some of you have caught COVID. Some of you have
had a close family member catching COVID - indeed some of you have lost
a close family member because of COVID. Some of you have lost their job
and some are struggling and need to work extra hard to make ends meet.
Some of you live in a part of the world where there are serious local
political issues that threaten your daily life. How in the world did you
find the time to respond and to take part in this vote and/or
discussions on the Chapter Advisory Council given the extraordinary
challenges you are facing? I do not know, but I do feel that there
should be more recognition for people like you - and it infuriates me -
literally my blood boils, when I hear ignorant people putting Chapters
down. Such ignorance is not bliss - it is oblivion.
I am not going far. I'll still be a Chapter Advisory Council Delegate
for ISOC UK England. If you want to get rid of me, you are going to have
to try harder than that. :-)
Stay safe, and Best wishes for 2021,
Olivier
