Dear Mahad,

Thank you for your email. If I may, I would like to respond. You raised an important question regarding options for our community’s participation and involvement at ITU Plenipotentiary (PP-18). While the event begins in two weeks, it is the culmination of months of preparations. Some of ISOC’s members have been involved in their national and in regional preparations, and helped shape the dialogue during these processes.

An announcement for Fellows to PP-18 went out to ISOC members 5 months ago. Nadira Al Araj with ISOC Palestine, Paola Perez with ISOC Venezuela and Abdulkarim Oyolede from ISOC Nigeria were selected. Following the suggestion by Members to have someone with past ITU experience as a mentor for the fellows, Judith Hellerstein from the Washington DC Chapter was selected, given her many years of ITU related experience.

However, there are practical and financial considerations to take into account which limit the size of ISOC’s delegation. While there are limited number of fellowship spots, there are ways that our community can be involved while the discussions are happening in Dubai.  On the call with Chapters scheduled on Thursday, we will explore some of those options which includes our Communications Plan and how we can work together to deliver our PP-18 messages.

ISOC has a PP-18 section on the website located here: https://www.internetsociety.org/events/un/plenipot-2018/isoc-activities/

Please continue to visit this page for the latest updates.

I hope you can join the call on Thursday.

Thanks again.

Elizabeth

Thanks Christine,

We are interested in this and we were even thinking of sending someone to attend this event in Dubai. However, we have learnt that this is only for government and associations like isoc etc. Unlike ICANN with its friendly approach of inviting all. So what other options are there? Can isoc sponsor a rep from our chapter who can contribute and lobby others to ensure the internet remains for all without any interference and restrictions, etc. and support all other initiatives of isoc. This is a very important event and the more people from isoc and chapters experienced with the ITU's complex bureaucracy and dynamic attending, the better.

Regards,

Mahad

Dear Colleagues,

We are organising a call with Chapters in advance of the ITU Plenipotentiary 2018. The call will take place on 18 October @ 10:00 UTC and 20:00 UTC (to cover time zones).

Please find the details below:

As you are fully aware the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference begins in Dubai later this month. The Plenipotentiary is an important conference that sets out the strategic agenda for the ITU for the next four years. The conference will take on key substantive matters that are of interest to the Internet Society community, e.g. Cybersecurity, Internet Governance, Access issues, within the context of the ITU’s role. Based on some of contributions submitted to the conference so far, there are proposals that seek a firm positioning of the ITU on Internet Governance matters. Given the Internet Society’s important mission for an “open, globally connected, secure and trustworthy Internet for everyone,” we have much work to do to ensure that the Internet continues to be an open, global platform for innovation and that collaborative governance processes that have enabled the Internet’s success continue to be supported.

Please join the Internet Society’s PP-18 team for a discussion on our engagement at PP-18 on Thursday, October 18 at 10:00 UTC and 20:00 UTC. We will discuss amongst other topics, our goals, priorities and key messages. We would also like to hear from you on how we should engage with our Chapters during PP-18. We hope you can join us.
