Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I am honoured to have been nominated as a candidate for the Chapter
Advisory Council Steering Committee for a fourth year running, which
might seem long, but time passes ever so quickly.
The past years have been very busy indeed and whilst I cannot claim to
have been leading all efforts on the Steering Committee, my main impact
in these years has been the initiative to have IETF Registration Fee
support for Chapters, which has finally been implemented as an
application-based selection of promising individuals to have their fee
waived at a local IETF meeting. This initiative has been well used in
recent IETF meetings and I hope the Board of Trustees will decide to
continue it in future years.
This continues in the spirit of having Chapters cooperating more with
the IETF, but also with Organisational members, many of which are also
actively involved in IETF.
This year again, I was immensely impressed with some of the Internet
Society Chapter Community Funding projects that have been proposed and
funded, especially those focussing on both accessibility and access. The
Internet Society has communicated these successes much better and this
has both raised its profile, but also the profile of the Chapters that
were involved. As other organisations shrink their community budgets by
re-aligning their priorities, we need to continue sustaining these
Chapter projects. It is the strength of our community projects that
promotes purpose and dynamism in our Chapters.
I am always thrilled to see all of the events that are set-up by
Chapters locally and thanks to the support provided by the Internet
Society, streamed around the world. This is building an amazing library
of topical events that mark the Internet's history. That said, I still
think that we can do better, and expand this to produce more video
content. Like I said last year, the young generations do not have time
to read, but knowledge transfer is possible these days with a very low
cost set-up for video production, thus in the next year I'd like to have
the Internet Society study what means could be provided to Chapters to
enable them to produce low cost videos and streaming of the content they
produce.
Finally, the Chapter Advisory Council has now been established for
enough years to see what is working and what is not working. One thing
that has been of concern to me is that to this date, only a small number
of Chapters have fully realised the Channel that they have towards the
ISOC Board of Trustees. I would like to say "wake up everybody, this is
YOUR Chapter Advisory Council" - and to make more use of it to develop
the Internet Society mission. This year again, we are at a crossroads
and the strength of the Internet Society is its chameleon-like structure
where its advice is received equally well by the Technical community,
Civil Society, Governments and the Private sector - because that's where
its own members come from. It is through communication that we will feel
stronger together. Having noticed that both the Board of Trustees and
Internet Society Staff have passed this fundamental step, it is about
time that Chapters embrace this too.

I am attaching a short bio which is identical to last year, as I have
just carried on the responsibilities I had.
I am happy answering any questions you might have, on this forum or to
my email below.
