I know Andrew first from his work as an Internet Technologist at Dyn. He and colleagues were a reliable source for me and many other reporters. They understood the nature of the international Internet in a depth few could match.
I've had a few exchanges with him on Internet issues. His comments were always well-informed although we didn't always agree.
Beyond the words of welcome, I believe it a good time for all of us to bring ISOC back to our shared goals. First, as Gonzalo notes
"
He is committed to the ISOC
vision of an Internet that works for all of us
"
I believe ISOC needs to take strong stands where we can make a difference in the cost of access. We are doing good work on Community Networks. I support CN and have even volunteered for two of them. But CN's are highly unlikely to cover more than 2%. We also need policies that will make a difference for the other 98%, as I've written here before.
"All of us" must include the majority of Internet users that are barely represented in ISOC decisionmaking. Until recently, our home page asked for "like-minded" members. However,
"55%-60% of landline broadband users are in the "Global South," about 500M. The South
is 65%-70% if you include "wireless-only" many of which are 4G LTE at 10 megabits or more." bit.ly/65percent<http://bit.ly/65percent>
> Gonzalo
adds
Sullivan "
B
elieves fervently in the struggle to bring an Internet that is open, globally-connected,
trusted and secure to everyone.
" That corresponds to what I know of him as well. ISOC policy needs major changes to come closer to our ideals.
Sullivan comes from the IETF, a group far more open than ISOC. Under Kathy Brown, ISOC has made all decisions in a top down manner, despite our common belief in "multi-stakeholder." Kathy, a generous person I've always respected, never overcame her big company background as a Verizon advocate. I'm hopeful Andrew can lead the change we need.
-------
With any leadership change, several executives are likely to leave. I think it's important for all of us to consider what the right qualifications are for their replacements. I hope many of us will speak up.
On staff hires, I think we should look for people who have succeeded in organizations - like the IETF - where the divisions, like our chapters, play a leading role. while working with the larger group.
On policy hires, I believe we should look for people who have shown they can build bridges across the North-South divide. The Internet was built largely by the more affluent countries. Today, the less affluent are a majority but the system hasn't adjusted. We believe "The Internet is for Everyone." ISOC will fail if we don't adjust.
----------------
I speak too much on this list. Please speak up, whether or not you agree with me.
Dave
