Dear Colleagues,

The following application to start a SIG for Enabling Communities has been received (See application below) . It is being sent to the chapter leaders community for comments.

Please note that the SIG is not yet formed and has not officially been recognized by the Internet Society.

Remember , a SIG is a non-geographical independent entity recognized by the Internet Society. A SIG is formed by Individual Members of the Internet Society to pursue significant long-term activities that support the mission of the Internet Society. a SIG is Provisional, being chartered for an initial period not to exceed two years.

A Provisional SIG will exist until its charter is withdrawn by ISOC or otherwise expires, until its dissolution, or until it is converted it to a Permanent SIG. Internet Society may extend a Provisional SIG's charter; but no SIG may be Provisional for more than three consecutive years. Find more information about SIGs here: http://www.internetsociety.org/who-we-are/internet-society-special-interest-groups-sig

The period allowed for comments is one week from today and the deadline is March 20th, 2016.

Please do not hesitate to contact me on or off list.

SIG application

1. Proposed name of the SIG

Interest Society SIG Enabling Communities

2. Community of Interest the SIG will serve

Our group

-not limited by geography, open to all

-Focus in sharing best practices in Open Hardware and Open Technology for communication technology to empower local communities to access the Internet

-Share technology solutions of MESH Technology and Community WIFI

- Education Outreach

"This group aims to reduce the communicational barriers faced by isolated communities, and by expanding knowledge of communication technologies to enhance their access of information."

3.Purpose and scope of SIG

  * Originally we looked at an ISOC Calgary chapter but the SIG appears to be a better approach since our membership would span all the ISOC and Non ISOC communities since it has specific interest.
  * It is concerned in connecting small off the grid communities
  * A SIG approach makes good sense and want to be inclusive and sharing

  * The group will provide workshops that serve to expand community knowledge and skills in communication technologies. In particular, involvement in amateur radio will be encouraged through educational seminars aimed at facilitating certification and radio operation.
  * We further aim to provide education to students in order for them to better serve communities. Creating a wider base of knowledgeable teachers provides the basis for more powerful outreach.

 4. Outline of key priorities for the first year of the SIG

  *   Deliverables

  * Complete application, bank account, terms of reference
  * We aim to provide online an online academy for newcomers

https://eliademy.com/

  * Creation of Ebook for off line reading and review
  * Outreach to HAM Amateur Radio global membership
  *   Share best practices

  * Organize educational seminars aimed at expanding communication technology knowledge.
  * Provide technical support for the installation of internet networks in isolated communities

 5. Founding members of the SIG

Please list complete contact information and affiliations for all persons who will be working together to create the SIG. A minimum of 25 Internet Society members is required for a Charter. Please supply their names. A cross regional or global approach is encouraged.
