Vint,
it should at least for those genuinely interested and already involved.
Guifi was among the projects showcased in the recent webinar on this
subject.
So were Rhizomatica's projects in Mexico and a few others.
After the webinar I have had a chance to talk to some people close to the
Rhizomatica project and found out something interesting. It is known that
they operate a 2G cellular network for voice. Its resources are extremely
limited so they have to cut the calls really short. Data (Internet) is
mostly hopeless. The new thing I heard last week: the evolution of the
project may not be towards 3G, 4G, 5G, but more likely to 2G plus data. I
haven't found out the rationale for this choice but speculate it could have
something to do with the cell radius, which is larger in the older
technologies (5 km vs. 2 km of 3G onwards?) Any thoughts, anybody?
One should realize that these more ambitious projects are installing a cell
base and not only WiFi, so not necessarily the model others are following,
where we assume some point-to-point access in the community for backhaul
and then spread it out by WiFi and LAN or by mesh networks.
