This is my Election Statement

Election Statement by Olga Cavalli

Being an ISOC Trustee means being a responsible steward of one of the most
significant inventions the world has seen – the Internet – and preserving
the freedoms and values that have made it the global phenomenon it has
become.

I am a multi stakeholder Internet technology and policy specialist, my
experience comes from activities developed in the academy, the private
sector, government and civil society organizations.

I am committed to enhance the involvement of developing countries in
Internet debate spaces and policy definition processes which define the
rules of the Internet; this is why I devote part of my time as volunteer to
several capacity building activities and in the ISOC Argentina chapter.

I have been involved in the Argentina Chapter since 2006 and I am a Board
member since 2010. I was chapter´s secretary and since 2015 I am the
chapter´s president. During my participation in the Chapter, several
successful projects were developed: two books focused on the IPV4 / IPV6
transition which were translated into several languages, organization of
various national and regional outreach events towards gender balance in
ICTs, and conferences as well as activities related to the promotion of the
STEM and engineering among young girls in our region.

My experience in university teaching is extensive and I frequently
contribute to my community with papers and book chapters about issues of my
competence.

If I am elected as a member of the Board of Trustees I want to focus my
work on four main areas:

1. Connect those not connected today, Internet for everyone:
For several years I have been involved in developing connectivity projects
in rural areas of Argentina, mainly using wireless technologies. My
experience also includes working with government and policy makers, at the
national, regional and global level. Connect those not connected involves
both infrastructure and the right policies. I want to share my experience
and my perspective from the developing world in the south hemisphere, with
ISOC and with the community to achieve this important goal.

2. Increase participation of developing countries in the IETF:
A stronger involvement of experts from developing economies in the IETF is
fundamental for creating knowledge at the local level. This challenge must
be faced working with local universities, chapters and with the local
community. My involvement in the global Internet Governance, in regional
capacity building activities and university teaching, will help ISOC facing
this challenge.

3. Equal Internet access for women and girls:
For several years I have been involved in promoting equal access to the
Internet and to ICT tools by women and girls, who can be empowered by the
Internet to learn and work. My experience in promoting the engineering
career among young girls in Latin America and the Caribbean has given me a
broad background to help ISOC facing this challenge. There is a need for
ICT trained professionals to face developing challenges, and young women
can find here a good career opportunity. ISOC should have a central role in
this important issue and I can surely add value to make this possible.

4. Promote a coordinated work among ISOC and its chapters:
As a member of the ISOC Chapter Advisory Council, and as President of ISOC
Argentina Chapter, we have learned about the need for a closer coordination
between ISOC and the Chapters. The idea behind this coordination is to
avoid confusion among the community members and to reinforce their roles.
If a coordinated work between ISOC and chapters is achieved, then it will
be much easier for ISOC to become a reliable source of information for
governments, policy makers, and for the whole community. I can personally
help to face this challenge as I have extensive knowledge of the Latin
American, Caribbean and global Internet communities and ecosystems.

I want to be in the ISOC Board of Trustee to share my vast experience as a
technologist, as policy maker, as an expert in Internet Governance and
gender balance activities, all towards having Internet for everyone,
keeping it open and reliable.
