The following application for an Internet Society Chapter in Tanzania has been received.

It is being sent to this list for peer comment and review. Please note that the Chapter is not yet formed and has not been officially recognised by the Internet Society.

If you happen to know any of the individuals proposing to establish the Chapter, then your feedback is particularly welcome.

The period allowed for comments is two weeks and the deadline is thus 10 April 2015.

Chapter application Form

A. Proposed name of the Chapter:

Internet Society Tanzania Chapter

B. Community of Interest the Chapter will serve:

Internet Users who live and/or work in the United Republic of Tanzania.

C. Purpose and scope of Chapter:

The general purpose of the Chapter shall be to advance and promote the general purpose and guiding principles of the Internet Society by serving the interests of the global Internet community through a local presence and the use of local language. The Chapter will further carry out activities designed to engage the local community in sharing information about how the Internet is developing and to support the work of the Internet Society.

Generally, the Chapter’s purpose and scope include:

- Protecting the open, innovative development and use of the Internet;

- Engaging and educating the next generation of Internet users and helping them shape the evolution of the Internet and

- Promote co-operation and dialogue between itself as a representative of the Tanzanian Internet community, Internet Service Providers, Regulatory authorities and other interested parties

D. Outline of key priorities for the first year of Chapter

1 Registration at ISOC

2 Registration as NGO in TZ

3 Publicity to the Local Internet community and invitation of more members

4 Participation in the local Internet Governance Forum

5 Development of a portal for the chapter

6 Participate in improving the local capacity in Internet Technologies for local experts

7 Participate in all necessary discussions on Internet related Laws, Policies and Regulation at the country level

F. List of supporters and partner organizations:

There are no formal partnerships established. However, the Chapter is currently receiving support from tzNIC (.tz registry) and TCRA (The Regulator).

G. Membership

Communication with members will be through a mailing list  i.e members at isoc.ne.tz<mailto:members at isoc.ne.tz> and other local mailing lists. A portal that is expected to be developed will also reach members and prospective members.

H. List of requirements

The Chapter needs to operate as NGO and Not for Profit making organization. Therefore it has to be locally registered under the Tanzania's NGO Act of 2002.


I. Additional information

ISOC Chapter formulation in Tanzania has been a drive from different multi-stakeholders and internet users in Tanzania that aims in promoting the general purpose and guiding principles of the Internet Society by serving the interests of the global Internet community through a local presence and the use of local language such as Swahili.
