[Chapter-delegates] A few updates on NMI

Dear Alejandro,
Thank you for your thoughful reply. Actually I agree that NMI is not necessary. But it is there and it is going to do something. Given that NMI has asked for inputs on what they should do, it seems reasonable to me to suggest that they address the challenges that have been congently identified by Bob.
You object to "in their respective roles", but that, as well as much of the rest of the proposed ToR, are copy-pasted from the NETmundial outcome document. Since NMI stated that proposals should be consistent with the NETmundial outcome, it seemed sensible to me to incorporate parts of the NETmundial outcome in the proposed ToR.
Best,
Richard

Richard,
I too am very thankful to Bob Hinden and to Kathy Brown for their reports, messages and good work.
Let me express my profound disagreement with your statement for NMI. First, at the most general level, it assumes that NMI is necessary, and is read as too happy that a single, overarching Internet governance structure may emerge.
As far as I can tell both views have not been backed by ISOC and are in fact contrary to ISOC's accumulated views, experience, principles and outlook.
Going into more detail, I oppose statements or phrases such as "in their respective roles", for favorign a silo approach instead of a collaborative stance, and many others. Going into further detail would drag us into a rathole and I refuse to go that way when we have such a massive discrepancy at the highest level.
Yours,
Alejandro Pisanty

Dear Bob,
Thank you for this. I see that NMI is asking for input on their Terms of
Reference.
In light of the challenges that you identified in your year end message, I
would propose something like the following for the NMI:
Recognizing that the Internet is a global resource which should be managed
in the public interest, the NETmundial Initiative will seek to develop
enablers/solutions for distributed Internet governance, ensuring the full
involvement of all stakeholders in their respective roles and
responsibilities, so as to address current pressing challenges, in
particular government actions and inactions, and private sector actions,
that result in restrictions of freedom of speech and of personal privacy; in
mass surveillance; in loss of control of personal information; in
monetization of personal information; in lack of cybersecurity; in
cybercrime; and in lack of universal, equal opportunity, affordable and high
quality Internet access.
The NETmundial Initiative will also seek to develop enablers/solutions for
distributed Internet governance that will favour the realization of all
human rights, recognizing that human rights are indivisible and that they
include democracy, economic and social justice, and the right to
development; and that governments have primary, legal and political
accountability for the protection of human rights.
When developing enablers/solutions, the NETmundial Initiative will use
democratic, multistakeholder processes, ensuring the meaningful and
accountable participation of all stakeholders, including governments, the
private sector, civil society, the technical community, the academic
community and users. The respective roles and responsibilities of
stakeholders should be interpreted in a flexible manner with reference to
the issue under discussion.
Best,
Richard

Dear Steve and Bob,
We wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your feedback regarding
the NETmundial Initiative's activities and organization, as outlined in the
recent joint statement issued by ISOC and ICANN.
In response to your feedback, the NETmundial Initiative will implement the
following suggested changes:
Draft the Initiative's Terms of Reference through a bottom-up community
consultation process;
The first meeting of the Coordination Council will now be delayed for at
least three months to allow for inclusive community input;
This first Coordination Council will be named ‘Inaugural’ with a limited
term in order to emphasize the evolving nature of the structure and form of
the NETmundial Initiative;
Appoint Dr. Wolfgang Kleinwächter as Special Ambassador to increase
cooperation and ensure open channels of dialogue between the community and
the Inaugural Coordination Council.
The NETmundial Initiative remains committed to working collaboratively with
all interested parties in helping inform and shape its way forward.
Sincerely,
NETmundial Initiative Transitional Committee Members:
Fadi Chehadé (ICANN)
Richard Samans (WEF)
Virgílio Augusto Fernandes Almeida (CGI.br)
