It is just an internet service like any other, and can be MITM'ed just 
as much as any other. WiFI, IMO, is a much bigger MITM risk.
Any security you need should be at the application layer.
I doubt if any carrier could make money by offering only a walled 
garden. Who are the companies who do so?
