That's all very true and many of us probably are willing to make an effort
that there is enough of healthy food for everybody on our Planet. That's a
real challenge for humanity, may be even bigger than the model of Internet
governance...
Having said so, I must admit I have some reservation towards an idea of
using Chapter mechanism to support this noble idea among members of
Internet Society in particular and world population in general.
The authors say:
*" Internet of Food is a concept equivalent to Internet of Things"*
The idea Internet of Things is that "Things" have some networked processors
and communicate with each other via e.g. IP protocol. They are just (in
some sence) an extension of Internet network. It is easy to imagine a
"smart" refrigerator, which sends a message to nearest shop to order the
food, which his owner likes and his health allows him to eat. On the
contrary I can hardly imagine an apple with chip inside...
The same is with Interplanetary Internet Chapter, which deals with using
space for IP communication (and not to explore interplanetary space) or
Disability Chapter which deals to make Internet easier accessible for
disabled persons (and not to heal diseases or reduce accidents, which led
to disability).
*" Yet, the discussion on how we combine the power of the Internet with
food is little explored in spite of its massive potential to affect key
areas such as food security, transparency, health and food waste through*
*innovation and openness. "*
Of course, Internet might be useful to solve many food problems, being
nowadays indispensable tool for communication and propagation of ideas for
any issue.
*"The proposed chapter on Internet of Food aims at leading the discussion
regarding this new field and to engage a wide audience in building better
solutions for how to feed the planet in a healthy and sustainable way."*
In this context, Internet just serves as a tool of discussion, in the same
manner as telephone, newspapers and other media. The very topic of the
discussion (food) cannot be easily linked to Internet.
In short: the topic is very important, the goals of the founders are noble
and worth supporting, but the Chapter mechanisms seem not appriopriate for
this purpose.
With best regards,
Jacek Gajewski
