[Chapter-delegates] ICANN and the ietf meeting in London March 2-7

To clarity a bit more what ICANN's role is with respect to the upcoming IETF meeting in London, here's a bit of background and some data points.

First, some basic background on the IETF's finances:

IETF meetings are arranged by the IETF's meetings team that is part of the IETF Secretariat.  The finances and contractual matters are handled within the Internet Society on behalf of the IETF.  See RFC 4071, http://www.ietf.org/secretariat.html and other information about the IETF Administrative Support Activity (IASA).  A recent view of the IETF's budget is at http://iaoc.ietf.org/documents/%172014-IETF-BUDGET.pdf .  It shows an estimated total cost of meetings for 2014 of $1,934,000 for three meetings.  (See line 7 under expenses.)  Line 2 under Revenues shows $930,000 in meeting sponsorships for the year.
Sponsorship or hosting is a standard part of the financing for IETF meetings.  Below is a list of both the upcoming meetings and several past meetings showing the host/sponsor for each meeting.

ICANN's role for this meeting is the same as previous and future hosts such as Cisco, Huawei, Ericsson, DENIC, EURid, et al.  Once a upon a time, hosts for IETF meetings were always located in the city where the meeting took place.  In recent times, that's sometimes the case but not always.  In this case, ICANN is a non-local host.

ICANN has definitely not taken the role ISOC has.  We are in the role of host/sponsor, which means we're providing some financial support.  We have no role regarding the program or organization of the meeting except I believe we are also responsible for the social event.

My blog was aimed primarily at the folks in the ICANN community who are less familiar with the IETF.
