I'd like to add another reason why people abstain - that they are
confident in whatever the outcome is.

Unless we actually ask, we won't know why people abstain.

Having served in the past on the nomcom, I know a *lot* of effort
goes into finding good quality candidates. It is extremely time
consuming and you meet some utterly outstanding people.

Unfortunately that doesn't solve the systemic issues that people from
under-represented groups (regions, genders, cultural groups etc) face.
Quite simply the pool is larger from the developed nations because of
that development - more people simply have more opportunity to
undertake the activities that qualify them as candidates! There are
other reasons also.

We need to grow our own a bit more - probably through the leadership
programs we have.
