[Chapter-delegates] Is Internet Society Newsletter dead ?

+1 Joly,

Thank you very much for the clarification. I was not aware about that. Going through your message, It seems like the best option is to keep our existing newsletter rather than drying what has been a failure in the past.

So It is better to improve our existing newsletter rather than replacing it.

Whatever platform we decide to choose, It will be important to make sure that news from ISOC and Chapters reach chapter members mailboxes in a regular manner.

Regards,

Victor.

Victor, a wiki has been tried, and still exists - http://wiki.chapters.isoc.org/ - but it was never much used.

Also Elena of ISOC Romania made a a valiant attempt to launch a buddypress http://www.anuntul.eu/wordpress/ which similarly failed to inspire much participation.

The fact is that the newsletter, carefully curated by hand, with individual elements coming out as thy happened via wordpress + rss, followed up by a monthly global digested mailout, was as effective as it gets. My only suggestion would be that there be some more detailed style options, such as html or non-html. I especially appreciate that the non-html existing version was universally accessible.

The rss made it easy to embed chapter updates on our site. Right now all we have is ISOC headlines rss - http://www.internetsociety.org/rss - not by any means as comprehensive.

ISOC's piecemeal adventures into social media have, at times, been amateurish and embarassing. I myself have taken up moderation of the ISOC linked in group as nobody else was doing the job. While the ITU has a consistent program of masterfully produced side interviews from events, ISOC went for shaky phone versions <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbvna25jL2M> ,, etc, etc..

Recently North America regional director Paul Brigner has made a concerted effort to upgrade video capabilties of not just his region, but all regions. He should be supported in that effort.

Raquel Gatto made the point, in a recent North America members hangout, that it is important to take our discourse to where the people are today, but the corollary is that it's counter productive to abandon those that are happy with email etc.. I think it is good to enhance our communications over new platforms, but that they should only be supplemental to the robust and accessible existing ones.

Thanks Joyce for the update. While acknowledging the great work you and the ISOC Chapter support team are doing, more communication between ISOC-headquarters and Chapters is still needed to avoid such questions…

In the web 2.0 age, It is true that the ISOC Chapters newsletter is not still the best way to share updates and information among chapters. Blog, wiki and social Medias are new tools to maintain Chapters connected to each other and share information. So I welcome Joyce’s proposition of having a blog platform for Chapters information sharing. In addition to that, I suggest a wiki platform where Chapters can easily introduce information about their past, recent and future actives; a sort of “online’ ISOC Chapter Newsletter. Finally I call all chapters to create and keep up-to-date accounts on most popular social networks; at least Facebook and Twitter.

Thank you once again and thanks to Takaaki, Eduardo and Carlos for pointing out the issue.

Best regards,

Victor Ndonnang

Dear Takaaki-san, Eduardo and Carlos,

I understand your question is related to the overall ISOC newsletter. We are looking into replacing this newsletter with a blog platform (to be launched early Oct) that will also offer new "subscribe" options that can be filtered by specific topics. This will allow our readers to follow general updates, as well as specific themes. It will also provide the opportunity for chapter content and updates.

We will share more about this in the next coming weeks.

As for the link Eduardo posted to ISOConnect, this is the Chapter Officer 'newsletter', specifically addressing available resources or information relevant to the chapter officers. Information about funding, new available resources, important information you can share with your members and communities, etc. It mainly provides links to our website as we received the feedback some information is not always easy to find or needs some highlighting once in a while.

Hope this answers your question.

Kind regards

Joyce

I received this before:

http://us7.campaign-archive2.com/?u=1cd9d7df0f6d424140468f887 <http://us7.campaign-archive2.com/?u=1cd9d7df0f6d424140468f887&id=c47c15b005&e=33b8fcf700> &id=c47c15b005&e=33b8fcf700

It looks this is what we are going to use but...who knows? Can someone from staff let us know what happened to the newsletter?

Hi,

Is Internet Society Newsletter ended ?

There has been no inquiry since March about chapter contribution
(included below), and there has been no update of Internet Society
Newsletter since then.

So I'd like to confirm the newsletter is dead now.

And then, one more question, where(or how) do we report our activities ?

thanks in advance,
