[Chapter-delegates] ISOC Meetings @ ICANN Buenos Aires

Thanks all for your input.

The ISOC @ ICANN meeting is currently scheduled to run from 7PM to 9 PM so I don't believe there is a conflict with the ALAC activities. Also, due to our very close calendar proximity to the event (less than 30 days) it is extremely difficult make changes of dates, venues and substance, including trying to find a new venue in an already very packed conference, inconveniencing or losing those who have planned around the current schedule, communicating it to all potential participants, and other logistical re-engineering that may or may not go smoothly.

I would like to re-iterate here my understanding of the purpose of the meeting:

  1. To provide information and dialog for interested ISOC members of all types on current issues within the relationship between ISOC and ICANN
  2. To facilitate a forum of discussion for the issues top of mind as determined by the attending members themselves.

This has changed since the beginning of 2012 at the request of members and chapter leaders to assure a more meaningful and focused meeting. Further, the meeting belongs to all ISOC members, not just to chapters. If chapters would like a separate meeting for themselves and invite whom they wish, there is the opportunity to work with staff and re-insert such a meeting at future ICANN conferences. I fully understand the positions expressed here for those attending ICANN 48 in Buenos Aires and the issues and timing constraints they too are under. At this point we may consider ad hoc, on-site opportunities as parties come to agreement, but a whole-sale addition of another meeting in BA at this time is logistically not feasible. My apologies.

I look forward to additional conversations on this issue and to finding the best accommodation for the majority of participants.

Best regards,

Ted

I have to second what Evan says. Sunday is THE big day for ALAC meetings, so anything before 6.30 simply won't work. And yes, we would welcome others who want to hear the debates within the al-large - user - community

Having sessions Sunday before 5:30 conflicts with actual scheduled ICANN meetings, specifically the all-day At-Large session in which many ISOC representatives must participate (including myself, Holly and Eduardo). So that is a non-starter.

(In fact, given that At-Large Advisory Committee is the ICANN voice for Internet end-users -- it's in the bylaws, XI.4a<https://www.icann.org/en/about/governance/bylaws#XI> -- I would recommend that ISOC members who are not obliged to attend the Sunday ALAC session might be well served by attending anyway.)

I agree with Héctor about having specific speakers rather than doing the introductions around the room. As Holly said, I was thinking that, in addition to the formal Sunday meeting, there could be some kind of less formal, social gathering on the Tuesday before music night.

I wasn't suggesting going back to the old style of two formal meetings ... just trying to be a little creative and propose that a second event should be maintained, but changed to something lighter.

I believe that we could concentrate the night activity on Tuesday and doing the working session earlier in Sunday (4 pm to 5.30 pm?). I believe that long sessions are not good and after a while we do not have their full attention any more. May be we could prepare a list of speakers instead of having an individual speech for each country. Hector

Hi Glen

I don't think that is what Evan was saying. He was saying that Sunday night should be for policy discussions and hearing from chapters and Tuesday - before Music Night starts - should be the social components.

hi
I agree two meetings has merit and the first meeting can focus on social networking and the Isoc hq updates while the second one can be issues and concerns for the chapters

I think the efforts of staff was well intended but as Evan stated he didnt have a take away

Hello all,

I realize that IGF Bali is still on, but I would like to raise an issue that has been bothering me, in regards to the ISOC meetings at ICANN events. I am hoping that by raising this issue now we may be able to influence what happens at the ISOC meeting in Argentina next month.

Here are my own views:

I think it was a very bad idea to go from two meetings (Sunday and Tuesday) just to one. I am aware that not everyone can make the Tuesday meeting, so I am suggesting that the Sunday meeting be a formal and policy-based event, while a Tuesday event should be more for socializing and enabling Chapter delegates to learn from each other on local issues such as governance, communications and outreach.

(Yes, I know that Tuesday is ICANN music night. But that usually starts at 21:00 and runs very late, ISOC meetings really would not conflict.)

Splitting the two functions enables the main Sunday meeting to be wholly informed by ISOC policy staff of critical issues, the policy work that is being done, and to engage chapters on local initiatives and ideas that could be useful globally.

Anyway, that is my opinion, to go back to two meetings. The last one in Durban was near useless for me in terms of EITHER informing me about ISOC programs/priorities OR sharing knowledge with and meeting other chapters.

Thanks.
