My memory of this is that the map was thought to be the most attractive
way of showing the strength of our chapters - the number and spread across
the world. That way no one region appears to get priority over any others
and it tries to avoid some of the diplomacy issues where one countries
have disputes over their names.
If I may speak on behalf of the board - I don't believe there is a
specific policy along these lines, and truly my recollection is that is
was an initiative put forward by the comms team thought to be most
helpful.
On the down side it does things like list the Australian chapter as being
Sydney based - I am, but the Chapter is nationwide. I'm not convinced the
map is terribly accessible if you are blind or vision impaired, and it
doesn't help if you are lousy at geography!
If people don't find it helpful, or the best reflection of chapters and
their strength, number and diversity, we should look for better ways. I
like the idea of a list as well, and I think we can get around
sensitivities around names and so forth.
I'd be keen to hear from other chapter reps about how usable the newer
members who have found you through the isoc site think it is. ISOC-AU gets
a steady stream of people trying to join through that site, and a few
actually do follow through to our site. Since we charge for membership
they need to come through our pages.
The biggest issue really is keeping the isoc chapter info up to date.

perfectly good contact page at http://www.isoc-dc.org/contact/
By all means please let me know of any problems you see with
www.isoc-au.org.au pages!! The main issue we have is keeping up with the
submissions and media we do. I did another interview today on the
Australian government efforts to change internet interception and metadata
retention laws... but that is another story...
