This event will address how social behavior changes in cyberspace - and
attempt to foster positive collaboration in that environment. At the
Chapter Workshop in Philadelphia last week we discussed how ISOC can
reach new constituencies. This is part of an ISOC-NY effort to reach out
to creative arts community in NYC. I'll be providing a musical
soundtrack for the event. - David

Josephine Dorado is a virtual worlds and online community consultant,
educator, interactive events producer and skydiver. She was a Fulbright
scholarship recipient and initiated the Kidz Connect program, which
connects youth internationally via creative collaboration and theatrical
performance in virtual worlds. Josephine also received a MacArthur
Foundation award to co-found Fractor.org, which matches news with
opportunities for activism. She currently teaches at the New School and
is the live events producer for This Spartan Life, a talk show inside
the video game Halo.
Social behavior is radically transformed in virtual environments
Free of physical and time constraints, able to take on multiple,
disposable identities or assume anonymity, ad hoc efforts for relief to
victims of natural disasters and human rights initiatives come from the
same online empowerment that allows cyber-bullying, trolls and spam.
Optimizing virtual environments for education and positive collaboration
The students in Josephine Dorado’s Collaboration in Networked
Environments class at the New School create a theatrical performance
using task-based performance games in a virtual world. The games demand
active listening and interaction but participants can instantly connect
and cooperate regardless of geographical location or previous experience
with digital media or performance.
After the performance, the audience members can ‘embody’ an avatar and
participate in an impromptu dance to experience the same immediacy and
connection.
